PharmEcology Services Offers Upgraded Website

New site features state-specific information for pharmaceutical waste disposal.

HOUSTON – June 1, 2017 – PharmEcology Services, a business unit of Waste Management Sustainability Services, unveiled its new website and database. The new is the result of two years of redesign efforts. It is better equipped to help clients avoid fines and be sure they are following state and federal regulations regarding pharmaceutical waste management.

Several new features make it easier to search for drug products by brand name, generic name, or manufacturer. In addition to federal waste categorization information for over 220,000 drug products, the site identifies all drugs on the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health’s 2016 Hazardous Drug List.

Most notably, for the first time, there is also state-specific hazardous waste categorization at the product level. States can decide individually whether to call for stricter compliance rules. To keep users informed, the new site features State Summaries – documents clarifying state interpretations – that could greatly impact a client’s pharmaceutical waste program.

Monica Livingston, Sr. Implementation Manager of PharmEcology Services, was instrumental in giving the old “Waste Wizard” database its new look and feel, but the site is often just a jumping off point for deeper, operational involvement.

“The action part is the other side of what PharmEcology does,” Livingston said. “We go to clients and help them use the information from the site. We develop programs they can implement, help them through the action steps, provide training, and even audits if a program has been in existence for a while.”

In addition to looking up drug product information and regulations, customers can also go to the new site for news alerts and major regulatory updates. About 350 clients currently use the site, but within each client there can be hundreds of users – thousands overall will now benefit from this upgraded informational tool.
