Sustainable Valentine’s Day Gifts for Every Loved One
Nine ways to show love for both people and the planet

Valentine’s Day often arrives wrapped in glitter, plastic packaging and plenty of single-use décor — but it doesn’t have to be. A celebration of love can be thoughtful, memorable and sustainable. Not sure where to start? Who better to turn to than members of the WM sustainability team.
Small choices — like reusing materials, reducing waste or choosing options that have less of an environmental impact — can make a meaningful difference all year long. Holidays are a great reminder that sustainability can be woven into any celebration, big or small.
Here are nine ideas to inspire your planet-friendly celebration:
1. Create handmade gifts with repurposed materials
Don’t underestimate the value of a homemade card. There’s something special about receiving a gift created with you in mind. Use recycled paper, leftover craft supplies or household items to make cards, art or keepsakes. Little ones can help too by coloring or adding handprints or footprints.
2. Gift a “forget-me-not” treasure box
Fill a reused box or container with sentimental or useful items from home — notes, photos or small tokens worth passing on.
3. Start a meaningful love-note tradition
Create a low-waste tradition of sharing your appreciation for one another by using recycled materials to jot down notes of gratitude. Two ways to try it:
♥ Daily love-note door display: Create a simple sign that reads “We love you...” Each day, cut out a heart from recycled paper and write something you love about that family member or friend. Over time, the sign fills with a cascading collection of meaningful notes.
♥ Year-long “love bank”: Start on Valentine’s Day and continue all year. Write down things you love about your family members weekly (or whenever something comes to mind). Fold each note and place it in a recycled jar. On the next Valentine’s Day, open them and read them together.
4. Choose experience gifts over physical ones
Trade store-bought gifts for memories: a pottery class, nature walk, concert, cooking lesson or a simple unplugged evening together sharing your latest dreams for the future.
5. Swap traditional flowers for plants that last
Choose potted plants, herbs or succulents that keep growing long after the holiday. You might even consider planting something together outdoors — something that grows alongside your relationship.
6. Upgrade to ethical, thoughtful treats
When gifting sweets, choose fair-trade or organic chocolate options that support responsible sourcing.
7. Choose secondhand or upcycled treasures
Explore thrift stores, antique shops or local buy-nothing groups for unique, pre-loved gifts like jewelry, books or décor.
8. Wrap gifts sustainably
Skip foil or glitter wrapping paper. Use craft paper, recycled paper bags, newspapers, reusable fabric, baskets or jars instead.
9. Celebrate with nature-inspired, low-waste ideas
Try seed-paper cards, indoor herb kits, repurposed-vase flower bouquets (don’t forget to compost your flowers when they fade), soy candles, solar garden lights or DIY bird feeders made from repurposed plastic bottles.

Valentine’s Day isn’t about spending more — it’s about meaning more. Whether you’re crafting décor, exchanging upcycled gifts, or simply slowing down together, you can find more sustainable choices make the day feel intentional and deeply heartfelt.
This year, let your celebration bloom with creativity, connection and care for the planet.
